Japan's Earthquake Crisis
For this blog I watched the really well made documentary about the impending Japan megaquake that is expected to happen in the next 30 years. It is interesting to see how Japan as a society has basically been built upon, in part, due to the crazy natural disasters that plague the country. It makes sense considering that these natural disasters happen, that Japanese society really values harmony overall.
I was able to learn about all the measures that the government was taking to mitigate the disaster that specialists thought would happen in the coming decades: large underground reservoirs for trapping tsunami water, emergency staging areas and shelters, large scale building renovations to contend with both earthquakes and fires. I think the thought of disaster is very forefront in people's minds also because of all the other earthquakes that have happened in their lifetimes, especially the one that ravaged Tohoku and destroyed many people's homes.
Now the threat is much larger, and could effect a large population in Tokyo and other major cities. The thought of which is very fearful, but also admirable to see all the plans in place to stop it.
